Goodness of essential Fatty Acids

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are fats which cannot be synthesized or manufactured by the Human body but need to be obtained from outside sources - either through food or supplements.

Omega-3(Linolenic acid) and Omega-6(Linoleic acid) fatty acids are both classes of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are referred to as essential to the body as they support the cellular, nervous, metabolic and cardiovascular systems in a more efficient manner. However, these are not synthesized by the body. Unlike omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, omega-9 fatty acids(Oleic acid) are monounsaturated fats, produced by the body and also are beneficial when they are obtained in food from vegetable and animal fats.

The techniques utilized in processing of foods and oils destroys majority of essential fatty acids and this imbalance in ratio of Omega 3:Omega 6 produces a physiological burden on the body. Today’s processed and junk foods are full of unhealthy saturated and trans-fats which have detrimental effect on our body. On the other hand, healthy fats are critical to maintain optimum bodily functions.
